VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Hospice of Limestone County volunteers are the most important link between the hospice patient and the agency. It is the volunteer who maintains communication with patients and the family members and who is most sensitive to the unique needs of each individual.

Giving time and talents as a volunteer means receiving much in return. An array of volunteer opportunities is available to persons who have limited time to give as well as for those who have more flexible schedules.

Hospice is not a place, but a concept of care based on the promise that when medical science can no longer add days to life, more life can be added to each day.

THE ROLE OF THE HOSPICE VOLUNTEER

But what are you going to do?

I don’t know, Otie.

We’ll have to see what needs doing.

Maybe I’ll wash the dishes,

Or tell a joke,

Or bring you some soup.

Or play cards with Freddie.

If you don’t want to talk, maybe I can answer the telephone.

If tempers are flaring, maybe I can soothe them.

If you’re not sure you’re doing what’s best,

Maybe I can tell you you’re doing just fine.

If you have to get some rest,

Maybe you’ll trust me to sit by her bed.

If the commotion’s getting to you,

Maybe I can steer your in-laws out to dinner.

If you’re angry, maybe I can say that’s okay.

If you can’t bring yourself to tell her goodbye,

Maybe I can make it easier by saying it first.

If your strength is failing,

Maybe I can reach out my hand and keep you going.

If you’re falling apart,

Maybe I can put my arms around you and hold you together.

If you’re felling helpless, maybe we can pray together.

We’ll have to see what needs to be done.

Maybe you won’t need me for anything!

Maybe it’ll happen so quickly or you’ll have

So much support you won’t even need me in you house.

Maybe I’ll just call or stop in to remind you I’m standing by,

Ready to help to see what needs doing.
